You're Not Expensive. They're Cheap! Why Top Performers Must Demand Their Worth!
The first time I asked for double my rate, my hands were shaking.
I was convinced they'd overhear it or laugh and walk away.
Instead they didn't blink. They said "yes" immediately.
That's when I realized: I had been undercharging for years.
The Uncomfortable Truth
If you're creative, collaborative, and highly productive, you're rare.
Exceptionally rare!
Most people aren't any of those things.
You're the exception and exceptions don't get "average compensation"!
They need your expertise.
They need your competence.
They need your workforce.
They are dependent on you and not the other way around.
And if they "forget" then remind them with results which speak louder than any of their gossip could.
Why You Must Ask for More
Here's what happens when you don't ask:
- They assume you're satisfied and never offer more
- They budget less for your role because you taught them to
- They promote others who asked while you wait
- You resent the job and your work suffers
Asking isn't greedy. It's honest. It's saying: "This is my value. Acknowledge it or I'll find someone else who will."
Bad Environments Don't Deserve Your Fear
If the environment is toxic, if they don't respect your contributions, if they exploit your goodwill.. LEAVE!
"But what if I can't find another job?" You will. Good people always do.
"But what about stability?" There's no stability in a place that underpays and overworks you or rob your mental health.
"But I've been here so long..." Sunk cost fallacy. The time is gone. Don't sacrifice more of it!
The Quitting Calculation
Before you fear quitting, do the math:
- What's the cost of staying another year in the wrong place?
- What opportunities are you missing while trapped here?
- What's your mental health worth?
- What could you build with that energy redirected?
Usually, the cost of staying far exceeds the cost of leaving!
Your Expertise Is Leverage
You have something they can't easily replace: years of accumulated knowledge, relationships, context, and capability. That's not nothing.. that's everything!
Use it. Not arrogantly, but confidently. Know what you're worth and don't accept less.
The only person who decides your value is you. Stop letting others set your price.💰 You bring creativity, collaboration, and productivity. Demand compensation that reflects it.
